Tales of 3400

The greatest score that I have ever gained on one board was on that shown below:

SJ 10 8 5 3 2
HK 10 3
D9 8 7
C10
S9 7
HJ 8 7
DA K Q 4 2
CA K 5
DIR
SQ 6 4
HA 9
D10 5
CQ J 9 7 4 3
SA K
HQ 6 5 4 2
DJ 6 3
C8 6 2

East and West were Claudio De Lullo and David Leigh, shortly before they become English International Champions in the Junior Camrose.

This was the very first deal in a Sheffield District Pairs Competition on 20 January 1985. I was North at favourable vulnerability. South dealt and passed. West opened 1C, playing a complicated Strong Club system. East responded 2C. West proceeded with a couple of relay bids while East described his hand. West then bid 3S, which was to ask East about his spade holding. At this point, I waded in with an otherwise rather pointless Double. East passed to show Qxx or xx in Spades. West redoubled as a further enquiry, presumably to decide between a game in clubs or NT, but this was misunderstood and passed out!

I led C10 and West took this with CA. He ran S9 to SA, and South returned H2 to HJ, HK and HA. Declarer then came back to his own hand with a diamond to the Ace to lead another spade to the Queen and King. South now led H4 to my H10 and I drew the last trump from dummy. I led H3 to HQ and partner cashed two long hearts to leave me with three boss trumps. 3S redoubled minus six for +3400 points.

This was a Top by a margin of 4000 points but, being a Match Pointed Pairs event, this margin was rather wasted!

The worst score that I have ever lost on one board was also 3400 and that happened on the following board:

E/W Vuln

HA Q 6 4
D10 5 3
CA J 6 4

It was a club evening at Sheffield, 18 March 2004 to be precise, and again a current top junior was in opposition. Alex Foley was West, playing with his father, Glyn in the East seat. I was North and my partner was Dave Robinson, whom I consider as possibly Yorkshire's top player.

Notes
(1)Not everyone's choice!
(2)Not everyone's choice either, but perhaps worth a gamble!
(3)Not one of Dave's best gambits, if only because it was too clever for his partner!!
(4)Not everyone's choice yet again!
(5)If South can bid 4C, North can bid 5C! Hmm!
(6)Christmas has come early!
(7)For SOS...
(8)...but North is on a different planet.
(9)Salivating unpleasantly!

5C redoubled down seven. That was -3400. At least it wasn't vulnerable!
